Tutorial

Here are a few quick lessons to get you started using the application:

  • How to Start up the Application
    • Each time you start up iMaps, you will be automatically taken to the Conditions of User & Disclaimer page, where you will be prompted to click the "I Accept" button before you can enter the iMaps application.
    • Once you click the "I Accept" button, the first time you enter the iMaps application you will be taken to a page to select your preferred viewer for displaying the maps on your computer.
    • You have three options for displaying mapping information. The program will try to detect if you already have some of this software already installed on your computer.
      • The Raster option does not require any plugin to be installed on your computer, but with this option there is less functionality such as tooltips when you hover over items on the maps.
      • The Java and ACGM options require software to be installed on your computer to take advantage of the full mapping functionality.
    • For all options the mapping viewing format will remain in effect until such time as you delete your cookies or if you use the Tools option to change your Viewer.
  • How to choose from a list of predefined sets of features:
    • To start click on the Select Map dropdown box located at the top of the map window.
    • Select one of the named map themes that are available E.g. CrimeStat
      • Note: Over time the number of map themes available for display will continue to grow. Check back with us often to see if there is new data you may be interested in viewing.
  • How to Search using an Address
    • Now let's start by searching on an address using the map theme you selected.
      • Enter in an address E.g. 510 Main and click on the Search button.
      • Once the map is displayed in the map window, notice that the address you searched on is identified with a red dot.
  • How to Search using an Intersection
    • Let's try doing an Intersection Search. Click on the dropdown box labelled Search and select Intersection.
    • Now type in the textbox the Street Name Tache and click on Search.
    • Now pick a street that intersects with Tache and then click on Map.
    • Once the map is displayed in the map window, notice that the intersection you searched on is identified with a red dot.
  • How to move around the Map
    • Click on the following icons, located on the toolbar at the top of the map window, to see what happens:
      • - Zoom In
      • - Zoom Out
      • - Zoom Previous

    • If you see the Pan icon try moving the map doing the following:
      • Click on the Pan icon.
      • Move your cursor to the map window and notice the Hand showing up.
      • To move the map display, click on the map and hold while moving the map display to where you desire.
      • Release the hold to redisplay the map.
      • By default iMaps will not allow you to stay in pan mode. If you would like to move around the Map again, you have to click on the pan button and repeat the above steps.
      • If you intend to move around the map a lot, you can turn the persistent pan option on so that iMaps will keep the pan hand on after every pan. This way you do not have to click on the pan button every time you want to perform a new pan. Below are the instructions on how you can turn on/off persistent pan mode.
        • Click on the "Tools" menu at the top left of the map window.
        • Under the "Tools" menu click on the check box.
        • If the "Persistent Pan" check box is checked then persistent pan mode is on, otherwise the persistent pan mode is off.

    • If you see the Center to a point icon try moving the map doing the following:
      • Click on the Center to a point icon located on the toolbar at the top of the map window.
      • Move your cursor to the map window and notice a pencil icon showing up.
      • Click on the map at the location you would like the map to be re-centered.
      • The Map will redisplay at the point you selected.

You are now trained and ready to work! If you wish to learn more about the application, check out further details in the Help section called "How Do I"

    • For example, if you would like to search for the intersection at Main and Portage, you would enter "main&portage" and click on the "Search" button.
    • If the exact match returns, the application will display the map at that intersection.
    • If several matches are found, it will display street names that start with the letters you entered or sounds like the name you entered. At this point you can change your street name search criteria or click on the desired first street to then see a list of intersecting streets. Click on the desired Intersecting Street and click on the Map button. A red dot will indicate the intersection selected.

This will take you to a view of the whole city of Winnipeg.

Print the map I see on the screen

There are three options for printing your map. Please note that the time it takes to print may take longer if your machine is under-configured.

      1. Print the map within a Standard Template on 8.5 x 11 inch paper (one size paper only).
        • Note: This function should not be considered if a high-quality printed map is required.

        • Above the map window, towards the top of the screen click on Print.
A new window will appear, with a message indicating that your map is being created.

        • Once you click on print you can then choose which of two different map types you would like to print:
          1. Standard Map - this version will include the City logo, North arrow, scale bar, Comment box, title and date printed.
          2. Full Page Map - this version will not include those items listed above for the Standard Map. Instead, all of the 8 1/2 x 11 page will be used to print the map.
The option to zoom in on the map before printing is still available in this version, but as the scale bar itself is not displayed on the full page map, you will not be able to set the scale bar setting.

        • If you choose to print the Standard Map version, you can customize the following on your map before printing it:
          1. Scale Bar
            • Click on the Scale Bar to display various styles of scale bars in metres that you may choose. Click on the style of Scale Bar you would like to have printed. This scale bar will then display on the screen. Note: The scale is approximate.
            • To resize the Scale Bar, use the Scale Bar Setting (left-hand side) and enter a value between 1 and the maximum value shown for the Scale Setting you are displaying.

          2. The Logo (Image) - Click on the Logo (Image) to display various images you may choose. Click on the style of image you would like to have printed. This image will then display on the screen.

          3. Title - Enter a title into the template.

          4. Comment - Below the Print Date there is a place to enter some text. Note: the box for comments can hold more text than can be displayed on the printed map, so truncation may occur.

          5. North Arrow - Click on the North Arrow to display various styles of North Arrows that you may choose. Click on the style of North Arrow you would like to have printed. This North Arrow will then display on the screen.

        • To change the Map Display Scale within the Map Print function, use the Scale Setting on the left-hand side. Enter a new Scale Value and click on Zoom.

        • When you have all your entire information ready in your template and are ready to print, click on the Print button on the Left-hand side under Print Setting. Note: To help make the printing process faster the next time you need to print, the application will remember the last information you customized for printing.

        • If you choose to print the Full Page Map version, you need to make the following adjustments on your browser's page setup settings prior to printing:
          1. At the top of the print window select menu item File
          2. Then select Page Set Up.... A new window will open.
          3. In the Headers and Footers box of this new window, delete any characters that may be in the Header and Footer text boxes. This will allow more room on the page for your map.
          4. Double click inside each margin box and press the delete key. As you move from one margin box to another, you will see a default margin size appear. These minimal default margins will allow more room on the page for your map.

      2. Use the print function provided with your browser. Please check out the print facilities within your browser's help function.

      3. Another method for printing the contents of the map window is to:
        • Right-click on the map.
        • Select print.
        • Follow the normal print method provided with your Browser.

Know what features are displayed on a map

The Displayed Features function will tell you what features are currently being displayed in the map window and at what scale they will be visible. The current map view is based on the features that exist in the current Map Theme you have selected.
      1. Click on the Map Detail icon located on the toolbar at the top of the map window or under the "Tools" menu at the top left of the map window.
      2. A window will appear that shows three sections:

          • Selected Features Displayed
            • A list of features selected for the current map theme, with identification of the view scale ranges. (E.g. City Outline (Visible between 1:1 and 1:999999999).
            • Detail + Tooltip scale ranges available

          • Map Center information

          • Information about the Map Display

              Upper-left: (612489.3, 5508304)
              Bottom-right: (653078.7, 5539606)
              Map Size: 40589.41 x 31302 (m)
              Map Scale
              Geodetic Datum
              Projection

Find a location if I only know a portion of the address

Use the Address Search feature to help locate the address on the map.

        To search for an address:
        1. At the top left corner of the map window notice the dropdown box labelled Search . Click on the dropdown box and select Address.
        2. Do not enter a street number.
        3. Enter the street name. You can enter partial information such as the first three letters of the street name but do not enter the street type (street, drive, avenue, etc.). Street name must start with a letter from A-Z.
        4. Click the Search button.
          • The computer searches for any matches to the criteria and returns one of the following:
            • An error message if no match could be found.
            • iMaps will display all the matched street number and street name
        5. Select an address and then click on the Map button.
If you do not find a match:
        • Do not enter the street type (street, drive, avenue, etc.). Street name must start with a letter from A-Z.

Change the map display to Raster, Java or ACGM

The Java and ACGM viewers displays a map in a cleaner, crisper format and provides more interactive functionality such as tool tips and hot spots over the Raster viewer format. To use this feature you must install the java run time environment or ACGM plug-in on your machine.
For instructions on installing the Java run time environment or ACGM plug-in, see the System Set up Information.

If you are running IE 5.5, the application does not use a plug-in and will default you to display your maps automatically in Raster Mode. The Raster mode does not present the maps as well as the Java or ACGM format and is not interactive (tool tips and hot spots) though you can still click for Property Information.

To change your map viewer between Raster, Java or ACGM:
          1. Click on the "Tools" menu at the top left corner of the map window.
          2. Click on the button called Change Viewer
          3. You will then be taken to a page to select your preferred viewer for displaying the maps on your computer.

Use the magnify function to see things up close

The magnify function is a special window that pops up at the same time your map window is displayed. As you move your cursor over the map, the magnify window shows the area you are going over in greater detail.

          To use the magnify function:
          1. Right click on the map.
          2. Select Magnify
          3. The magnify window pops up.
          4. Move your cursor over the map area to see things up close.
          5. If you wish to change the scale used to magnify, click on the dropdown box labelled Scale.
          6. To exit the magnify window, click on the Close button.

Temporarily remove some features from displaying on a map

Sometimes you may find that when you select a particular map to view, there are more features on the map than you wish to see at the moment.

You can temporarily remove some of the features from displaying by using the Legend menu to the left of the map window.

          • When you click on the legend menu, all the features that are currently displayed on the map will be checked.
          • Those features which have their check boxes checked, but appear grayed out, are those features that are currently not displayed on your map because of the zoom level your map is currently using.
          • To remove a feature, deselect the check box next to the feature. That feature will no longer display on the map.
          • The next time you request a map, those features you temporarily removed will be displayed again.

          Reset Page Setup

From your browser's File menu, click Page Setup. A dialog box will open where you can change your margins and add features such as date, page number, etc. that will be displayed on your printed page.

To reset margins to default settings use the following:

          • If margins are measured in inches enter .75 in all four margin boxes (left, right, top, bottom).
          • If margins are measured in millimeters enter 7.5 in all four margin boxes (left, right, top, bottom).

To change header and footer settings use any of the following features you wish to have printed on your page:

          • To display date, type &d in the header or footer box.
          • To display page numbers, type Page &p of &P in the header or footer box.
          • To display url, type &u in the header or footer box.
          • To position any of these features on the right hand side of the header or footer, add &b to the beginning of the feature you wish to have printed on the page. For example, to print the date on the right hand side of the page in the footer, type &b&d in the footer box.

Some common page settings you may wish to copy and paste into the header and footer are:

          • Common Header: &w&bPage &p of &P
          • Common Footer: &u&b&d

          Maximize the map window

You can use the Hide the Search area arrow located on the toolbar at the top of the map window.

If you wish to restore the Search area, you can use the Restore the Search area arrow located on the toolbar at the top of the map window.

Please Note: the changes you make to your map window size with these settings will remain that way until you change them back.
That is, the next time you open the iMaps application, the map window will be the size it was when you last exited the application.

        • No map is displayed (Vector/CGM)
        • Why are my buttons beside the Navigation Graphic different from other people?
        • Why can't I see street names?
        • Why does iMaps keep printing a map I printed in the past, instead of the map I am trying to print now?

          No map is displayed (Vector/CGM)

Here are a few items you can check:

          1. Running the Novell Client
            • A problem has been discovered that a machine could be running the iMaps application properly and displaying maps using the Java or the ACGM viewer mode and then all of a sudden the maps are no longer displayed. This problem occurs for users running the Novell Client on their machine. Many times the user just has to reboot the computer and the Java/ACGM viewer will start working again. Our recommendation is that the user be switched over to the Microsoft client.

          2. The ACGM plug-in may not be installed properly

Why can't I see street names?

          1. Street Names have fixed text locations on the roadway. The map may be positioned in such a way that the street name is not displayed. Try moving the map around to see if you can see the street name. See the How Do I Move around the map?

Why are my buttons different from other people?

Different buttons are used between the Java and ACGM viewers and the Raster map display format. See the section called How do I change the map display format from Vector/CGM to Raster/JPEG?

Why does iMaps keep printing a map I printed in the past, instead of the map I am trying to print now?

Your Internet Explorer browser may be storing, or caching, old pages/maps that you've printed in the past. To correct this, make the following adjustments to your browser:

          1. Open Internet Explorer.
          2. Select Menu item Tools>Internet Options...
          3. Go to the General tab.
          4. In the Temporary Internet Files section of the window, click the button Delete Files... and a new window will appear.
          5. Check the box for Delete all offline content, and click OK.
          6. Now click the Settings... button in the Temporary Internet Files section of the window.
          7. Click the radio button next to Every visit to the page.
